Is Your Business Showing Up In AI Answers?
12 Sept 20264 min read

A prospect asks an AI assistant to suggest a supplier. Does your business appear? If it does, is the description accurate, and does the answer link to a useful page?
Those are reasonable questions for a marketing manager. They are also more useful than chasing an impressive-looking visibility score without knowing what it measures.
AI share of voice is a way of comparing brand mentions within a set of AI answers. It can help you investigate how your business is presented. It cannot tell you how many customers saw those answers or whether they will contact you.
Start With Questions Your Customers Would Ask
Choose prompts that reflect genuine buying decisions, not questions written to make your brand appear.
For a commercial interior designer, these might cover choosing a fit-out partner, preparing an office brief or comparing approaches to a renovation. Include the relevant location and type of customer where they matter.
Keep branded questions separate. Asking an assistant to describe your company is useful for checking accuracy, but it is not the same as appearing when someone asks for suppliers without naming you.
Your sales team can help identify the questions worth tracking.
Record The Conditions Of Each Check
Create a simple record of the exact prompt, platform, date, language and any location or account context you can observe. Save the answer and its links.
Start a fresh conversation for each comparable check. An earlier discussion about your company can influence the next answer and make the comparison misleading.
Keep separate records for different platforms and experiences. Do not mix a chatbot answer with a Google search feature and present them as one uniform result. Google itself notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode can return different responses and links.
Repeat the same checks over time. Record changes to your method rather than quietly treating a different test as a trend.
Decide What Counts Before You Measure It
A brand mention, a recommendation and a link are different things. An answer may name your company without recommending it, or cite your article without naming your business.
Track them separately:
- Whether the answer mentions your brand at all.
- Whether it links to your website, and to which page.
- What it says about your services, location and suitability.
- Whether it recommends you or simply includes you in a list.
- Which other businesses and sources appear.
For a simple presence measure, count the checked answers that mention your brand against all the answers checked. A share-of-mentions measure instead compares your mentions with the mentions of all tracked brands. These answer different questions.
Choose a consistent counting rule, including how to handle repeated mentions in the same answer. Always explain that the result describes your test sample, not the whole market.
Check Accuracy Before Celebrating Visibility
A mention can create problems if it points to a service you no longer offer or gives the wrong contact details.
Follow each citation. Does the linked page actually support the description? Is it your current website, an old listing or an unrelated company with a similar name?
Correct inaccurate information on channels you control. Keep service descriptions, contact details and company information clear. If the source is elsewhere, consider asking its owner for a correction.
Do not rewrite your business around one unusual AI answer. Look for repeated issues that a real customer might encounter.
Keep Search And Enquiries In The Picture
An AI visibility check is an additional research tool, not a replacement for understanding how people find and use your website.
Google reports traffic from its AI search features within the overall Web search data in Search Console. That does not make Search Console a cross-platform AI mentions report.
Compare what you observe with website enquiries, customer feedback and referral information where it is available. A rising test score does not, by itself, prove more sales or even more visitors.
Use The Findings To Improve Real Answers
The most useful outcome of the exercise is often a clearer content task: explain who a service suits, answer a recurring comparison question or replace outdated information.
For Google's AI search features, the guidance remains grounded in useful content and established SEO practices. There is no special file or trick that guarantees inclusion.
Aim to make your business easier to understand and your evidence easier to check. That helps the person researching you, whether they arrive through a search engine, an AI answer or a recommendation from someone they trust.
